A groundbreaking independent special school, The Damara School, has officially opened in Thetford, establishing itself as a pioneering institution for children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges. As part of the esteemed Lotus Academy Trust, The Damara School Thetford is the first of its kind in the town, offering a distinctive and highly effective "unique blend" of academic instruction and therapeutic education, meticulously tailored to meet the individual needs of each child. Situated in a beautifully renovated historic listed building on Bridge Street, the school has undergone significant transformations to create a warm, welcoming, and conducive learning environment, specifically designed to support students with complex needs.

Sandra Govender, the dedicated chief executive of the Lotus Trust and Athena Education Support CIC, revealed that the school's opening was the culmination of two years of intensive planning and unwavering effort. This significant achievement, which saw the school welcome its initial cohort of nine vulnerable pupils, was made possible through the tireless contributions of staff, trustees, and volunteers. These individuals worked diligently on renovating the building and establishing robust policies and operational structures, ensuring The Damara School launched on a solid and sustainable foundation. The school specializes in providing comprehensive support for children facing SEMH challenges, a critical area of special needs education in Suffolk.

Julie Cox, the assistant head, expressed her profound excitement about the new school and her eagerness to work closely with the children and their families, guiding them towards success on their educational journeys. The school, which officially commenced operations in April, recently welcomed six pupils and ten staff members. Engaging activities, such as the innovative 'egg drop wonder' challenge, were organized on the first day to foster trust and build strong, positive relationships among pupils and staff. Cath Catt, chairman of the Lotus Academy Trust's members committee, voiced her delight at the opening of this much-needed special school, highlighting its commitment to a bespoke, holistic, and therapeutic curriculum. The Damara School Thetford has also garnered strong support from the local community, including prominent figures like businessman Gez Chetal, owner of the Thomas Paine Hotel, who praised the organization's dedication to community care and expressed enthusiasm for integrating the school into the vibrant life of Thetford.
