Special School A First For Town

Source: Suffolk News

The Damara School in Thetford, a pioneering independent institution under the stewardship of the Lotus Trust UK, has recently opened its doors, marking a significant advancement in special educational needs (SEN) provision for the region. As the first of its kind in Thetford, the school is dedicated to serving children from both Norfolk and Suffolk who find it challenging to thrive in mainstream educational settings. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as the demand for enhanced SEND provision in Suffolk continues to grow. The Damara School Thetford distinguishes itself with a unique educational philosophy centered on a mindful, therapeutic, and holistic approach, tailored to meet the complex needs of its students, who range in age from five to sixteen.

Led by Sandra Govender, CEO of the Lotus Trust and an educator with over three decades of experience, the school implements a flexible and innovative curriculum. This curriculum not only covers core academic subjects such as English, maths, and science, essential for preparing students for life beyond school, but also incorporates specialized classes designed to foster overall well-being and practical life skills. Students benefit from weekly mindfulness classes and individual sessions with a life coach, alongside unique subjects like practical budgeting, yoga, psychology, and sociology. This comprehensive educational model aims to equip students with the tools they need to navigate life's challenges successfully.

The establishment of the Damara School, funded through the Department for Education, represents the culmination of a dedicated two-year effort by Sandra Govender and her team. The school's independent status grants it the autonomy to craft educational programs that genuinely focus on the individual needs of each child, fostering an environment where they can flourish. Julie Cox, the assistant headteacher, shares the excitement for this new venture, emphasizing the school's commitment to supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children, and playing a key role in preparing them for a positive future. The Damara School Thetford is poised to make a substantial impact on special needs education in Suffolk and Norfolk, offering a vital and nurturing alternative for students requiring specialized support.
